Let your child make some schoolwork choices
Giving your child some choices about how to do school assignments can reduce study time problems. Let your child decide things like: whether to work in a bedroom or at the kitchen table, whether to start right after school or after relaxing a bit, and whether to start with math or reading. If a choice doesn't work out, let the consequences teach your child to make a different choice next time.

Chase Eversole and Jaxson Monroe traveled to Toombs County, on December 3rd, to compete in the inaugural Georgia HEO State Championship for heavy equipment simulators. The event was hosted by the Georgia Highway Contractors Association and the Georgia Heavy Equipment Operators Program. Each of the 25 Georgia schools, that currently have a HEO Simulator program, carried their classroom champions to the Toombs County Agri Center, to find out who is the best in the state.
Chase competed on the excavator and Jaxson competed on the bulldozer. In between competitions, the students participated in break-out training sessions presented by various industry partners. This gave the students the opportunity to network and gain valuable hands-on experience. The event ended with lunch and the presenting of trophies and prizes. Out of the 25 schools, Chase placed 11th in excavator and Jaxson placed 5th in bulldozer. Overall, a good experience for our Metter MCCA Tigers.

Offer your child funny and interesting reading
Sometime between ages seven and nine, children typically transition from mostly listening to and looking at books to reading them on their own. How can you support this transition? Boost your child's motivation to read. Seek out books that make your child laugh or want to know what happens next. Nurture your elementary schooler's curiosity. Then, demonstrate how to look up the answers to your child's questions in reference books or online.

Metter Middle School was recognized as a Math Leader School for High School Achievement, exceeding the criteria of 90% or more of their 8th grade students who took high school-level algebra scoring Proficient and Above on the Georgia Milestones End-of-Course (EOC) Assessment. In fact, 100% of MMS 8th grade students achieved Proficient and Above.
“MMS exemplifies our goal of continuous improvement for student learning, achievement, and growth,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. CaDeisha Cooper. "I commend the hard work of the students, their teacher, Ms. Bennett King, administrators and families to reach this high level of growth and achievement in mathematics.”
A total of 624 schools across Georgia met the qualifications to be recognized as Math Leaders. Throughout the fall, State Superintendent Richard Woods will visit schools identified as Math Leaders to recognize and congratulate them.
Math Leader qualifications are based on students achieving the Proficient Learner level or above on the Georgia Milestones mathematics assessments.

Lots going on this week! Be sure to check out our events calendar at https://www.metter.org/events

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you enjoy your break! We'll see you on December 2!

To encourage reading, spread out a blanket
Here's a tip for promoting family reading: Grab a blanket and spread it on the floor. Have family members each pick a book and lie on the blanket. Then, enjoy reading together! When your children are young, you can do the reading, but as your kids grow up, they will enjoy reading to everyone else. Blanket reading time is a great way to connect and turn your children into happy readers.

E-Tip for Parents from The Parent Institute
Support and encourage responsible learning
To be responsible students, children must take the job seriously. For that, they need their families' support. Make learning a priority in your family's life. Visit the library, explore new places, take nature walks. Then, establish routines that make reading and studying an expected part of each day. Encourage your child to keep trying when schoolwork is tough. And when your student has questions, demonstrate how to find the answers.

Use loving notes to build vocabulary
You can increase your child's vocabulary and positive feelings by including an encouraging note with your elementary schooler’s lunch. From time to time, write a note to say you are proud of your student. Use simple words your child knows and also a few challenging words that your child might have to sound out or look up. Your student will enjoy getting it and may even write back to you!

Choose discipline that promotes learning
Did you know the word "discipline" comes from a Latin word that means "instruction or training"? Most experts agree that the goal of all discipline should be to teach children, not to punish them. The late Dr. Lee Salk, a noted pediatrician and family dynamics researcher, suggested that discipline should be an "element in showing love for a child." What are your family's discipline policies teaching your child?

MHS/MCCA School Governance Team will meet on Tuesday, November 12 at Noon at the high school. This is an open meeting and the public is welcome.

E-Tip from the Parent Institute:
True or False? These strategies improve test success
Many tests feature true or false questions. Share these tips for answering them with your child: For the answer to be true, ALL of the information in the statement must be true. Your child should also think carefully if the statement contains absolute terms such as "always" or "never." And if your student doesn't know the answer? A guess has a 50 percent chance of being right.
