Candler County Schools Earn 4-Star Rating for School Climate in 2023-2024
The Georgia Department of Education has released the School Climate Star Rating for the 2023-2024 school year, and all Candler County Schools have received an impressive 4-Star Rating. This rating is a testament to the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering a positive and safe learning environment for students and staff.
The School Climate Star Rating is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate whether a school is progressing toward improvement. Schools are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 stars, with five stars indicating an excellent school climate, and one star signaling a school in need of significant improvement. Candler County Schools earned 4 stars, which reflects strong performance across four critical components: 1) perceptions of the school climate from students, teachers, and parents; 2) student discipline; 3) a safe and substance-free learning environment; and 4) school-wide attendance.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students, staff, and families to achieve this 4-Star rating,” says Dr. Bubba Longgrear, Superintendent of Candler County Schools. “This rating is a reflection of our community's collaborative efforts to ensure that our schools remain places where every student can thrive in a safe and supportive atmosphere.”
The School Climate Star Rating is designed to help schools identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth, and Candler County Schools will continue to work diligently to maintain and improve its rating. The district remains committed to #winateverything by providing high-quality educational experiences while ensuring a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment for all students.
The 2024-2025 Climate Survey is currently being conducted. Surveys can be taken by visiting www.metter.org and clicking on the school you wish to survey.

E-Tip for Parents from The Parent Institute:
Conversation starters enrich family meals
With a little imagination, mealtime can be a time for enriching conversation that develops skills like listening and speaking, thinking and sharing. To get the conversation started, try placing an interesting object in the center of the table to discuss. Or, cover old maps in self-stick plastic to make placemats and use them to plan a fantasy trip. You could also fix dishes from another culture and discuss that culture while you eat.

E-Tip for Parents from The Parent Institute:
Create a schoolwork routine that works for your child
Some children have more trouble concentrating than others. That can make working on assignments at home challenging. Establishing a study routine will make it easier for your child to get down to work. Turn off the TV and other distractions, and encourage your child to make daily to-do lists. Together, break big tasks down into smaller chunks. Then, let your child take a five-minute break after every 20 minutes of working.

Play a picture game to encourage caring for others
Children are naturally self-centered. But to become good students, they must learn to see and think about people beyond themselves. One way to help your child become more aware is to play a picture game. Gather photographs of people in a variety of situations. Take turns looking at a picture and describing how the people in it might feel. Start at the physical level. Imagine what people in the picture see and hear. Are they cold or warm? Then, imagine what they might be thinking or feeling.

E-Tip for Parents by The Parent Institute:
Break writing tasks down into easy steps
Many students struggle with putting their thoughts on paper. To help your child with a writing assignment, break the process into steps. The first step is to list everything your child knows about the topic. Next, ask what your child would like to say about the things on the list. Talking ideas through can make writing easier. After writing a draft, have your child put it aside for a day, then reread it and brainstorm about what would make it better.
