E-Tips for Parents
A positive attitude supports your child’s self-confidence
By age seven or eight, many children become self-conscious. A critical inner voice says things like, "That's stupid" or "You read like an idiot." These feelings can affect your child's willingness to tackle challenges in school. To help your child develop confidence, don't criticize the worrying. Instead, praise your student's effort and point out progress. Your calm reassurances will build a positive inner voice for your child.

E-tip from The Parent Institute
Help your child be a good sport, on and off the field
Sports and sportsmanship should go hand in hand. Learning to win without gloating and lose without complaining will help your child on the field and in the classroom. Encourage your elementary schooler to abide by the rules of the game, to follow the coach's directions and to play fair. Make it clear that good sports share the responsibilities of the team as well as its successes.

E-tips from The Parent Institute
Nutrition and exercise boost brainpower
March is National Nutrition Month. So it's a great time to talk with your child about healthy eating and the foods that nourish bodies and brains. Exercise is another vital part of health. As a family, make exercise a priority. Kids get more exercise when their families get involved! Turn off digital devices and have a push-up contest, walk up and down the stairs 20 times or shoot some hoops. Or, go for a walk together and talk about what you see.

Candler County Schools Earn 4-Star Rating for School Climate in 2023-2024
The Georgia Department of Education has released the School Climate Star Rating for the 2023-2024 school year, and all Candler County Schools have received an impressive 4-Star Rating. This rating is a testament to the district’s ongoing commitment to fostering a positive and safe learning environment for students and staff.
The School Climate Star Rating is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate whether a school is progressing toward improvement. Schools are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 stars, with five stars indicating an excellent school climate, and one star signaling a school in need of significant improvement. Candler County Schools earned 4 stars, which reflects strong performance across four critical components: 1) perceptions of the school climate from students, teachers, and parents; 2) student discipline; 3) a safe and substance-free learning environment; and 4) school-wide attendance.
“We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our students, staff, and families to achieve this 4-Star rating,” says Dr. Bubba Longgrear, Superintendent of Candler County Schools. “This rating is a reflection of our community's collaborative efforts to ensure that our schools remain places where every student can thrive in a safe and supportive atmosphere.”
The School Climate Star Rating is designed to help schools identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth, and Candler County Schools will continue to work diligently to maintain and improve its rating. The district remains committed to #winateverything by providing high-quality educational experiences while ensuring a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment for all students.
The 2024-2025 Climate Survey is currently being conducted. Surveys can be taken by visiting www.metter.org and clicking on the school you wish to survey.

E-Tip for Parents from The Parent Institute:
Conversation starters enrich family meals
With a little imagination, mealtime can be a time for enriching conversation that develops skills like listening and speaking, thinking and sharing. To get the conversation started, try placing an interesting object in the center of the table to discuss. Or, cover old maps in self-stick plastic to make placemats and use them to plan a fantasy trip. You could also fix dishes from another culture and discuss that culture while you eat.

E-Tip for Parents from The Parent Institute:
Create a schoolwork routine that works for your child
Some children have more trouble concentrating than others. That can make working on assignments at home challenging. Establishing a study routine will make it easier for your child to get down to work. Turn off the TV and other distractions, and encourage your child to make daily to-do lists. Together, break big tasks down into smaller chunks. Then, let your child take a five-minute break after every 20 minutes of working.
