First Chapter Fridays are held every Friday in Metter Middle School's 6th Grade ELA (English) classes. We ask community members to volunteer to read the first chapter of your favorite book (or we can choose one for you) to the class and tell them a little about yourself! If you would like to read to a class, please complete the First Chapter Fridays Form here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScemJWTOYzS3-9McEahBvq9lovxh0npW1_tk8f1zBNWVM9f4Q/viewform
Candler County Schools will be closed on Monday, January 15 to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We encourage you to attend the annual Metter MLK Day Parade at 2 pm in the downtown area.
The Candler County School District plans to operate on a normal schedule for Tuesday, January 9. With the timing of the storm, we feel students may be safer inside the school buildings and the storm should be passed by the time school ends as they predict it is moving very quickly. However, we will continue to monitor the weather and will keep you updated through social media, our websites, and through our mass communication text/call/email system. We hope that everyone will be safe as this storm passes through our area.

Have you visited our website lately? We've uploaded a new video on our homepage that you want to see! https://www.metter.org/o/mes

It's National Parents as Teachers Day! Research shows that greater parent involvement is a critical link in a child’s development of learning skills, including reading and writing. Take some time to teach your child(ren) something new today. Have a conversation with them about how school went today (don't let them just tell you "fine")...ask them specific questions about their classes...they will be excited to tell you all about it! We call this SWIRL (Speaking, Writing, Illustrating, Reading and Listening) and families can be engaged in SWIRL just as much as the children are at school, just by talking, listening and even playing games with your child(ren). Give it a try today.

Dr. Bubba Longgrear, Candler County School District Superintendent, has been recognized as one of four 2024 Superintendent of the Year Finalists for the state of Georgia by the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA)!
"It is an honor to be recognized as a finalist," says Dr. Longgrear. "This is truly a recognition for the good work of our school system and community."
Nominations were received from August 2, 2023, to September 1, 2023. Nominations were made by boards of education, colleagues, community members, and businesses, from all over our state.
There were 24 candidates nominated and four were selected as state finalists to represent the superintendent’s profession in Georgia. These four finalists will now move to the next phase of completing an application to enter the national competition, where one of the four will be selected to represent the state of Georgia against the other 49 states and Canada.
"This is a tremendous honor to be amongst the very best professionals who answer the call to serve in the K-12 Public School Superintendency...a most challenging and honorable career," says Dr. John Zauner, Executive Director of GSSA.

Our MHS Lady Tigers Softball Team lost 2-3 against Swainsboro Tigers at the Super Regionals being held at Crawford County High School. Tigers will now play Pelham High School. Follow the Lady Tigers on Gamechanger or check back here for updates.
