The New Year has many students and parents thinking about life style changes that they need to make to be healthier, or slimmer, or more organized. School breakfast and lunch are designed to help students learn how and what to eat to have healthy bodies now and in the future. Each meal is designed to have no more than 30% of the calories to come from fat and less than 10% from saturated fat.
School meals provide one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, calcium and calories over the course of one week of menus. Studies have shown that students who eat school lunch eat less fat than students who bring their lunch from home.
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant program at Metter Elementary School allows students to taste different fruits and vegetables. This allows the student the opportunity to explore foods that they have not previously tasted or maybe even seen. During January fruits such as Kumquats, blood oranges and star fruit will be available for each child in MES to broaden their food horizons.
You may improve your organization by taking advantage of School Nutrition new feature enables parents the ability to view and/or pay their child's lunch account online plus the system sends you an email when the child's balance is low. If you would like more information on this new feature please contact Kathy Hood at khood@metter.org or at 912-685-2360.
